ALFRED A GERDES
Services were held Nov. 25 for Alfred A. Gerdes at the Hayden Funeral Home, Olin with Rev. Frank Phillip officiating. Burial was in the Forest Chapel Cemetery near Anamosa. Military graveside services were given by the Coralville American Legion Post 721.
Mr. Gerdes, 64, died Nov. 22 at Veterans Hospital, Iowa City.
He was born near Anamosa April 25, 1917, the son of Garrett and Catherine Andreesen Gerdes.
He attended rural schools and was graduated in 1935 from Anamosa High School.
On June 9, 1939, he married Velma Purdy at Anamosa. He worked at the shirt factory in Anamosa until entering the U.S. Army in 1944. During his service he served in the Middle East, Africa and Europe and received a purple heart. In 1946 he was discharged.
He worked on farms near Wyoming after his discharge until moving to Coralville in 1955 where he was employed by the Iowa City school system as a custodian. Four and one-half years ago failing health forced his retirement. In 1980 he and his wife moved to Olin.
He had been a volunteer fireman for 25 years, was a 30-year member and past commander of the Coralville American Legion Post 721 and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Surviving him are his wife, Velma; two sons, Van of Glendale, Ariz., and Greg of Coralville; his mother, Mrs. Catherine Gerdes of Manchester; five grandchildren; two brothers, Louis of Dixon, Ill. and Garrett of Anamosa; sisters, Mrs. Gertrude Nost of Martelle, Mrs. Frances Brodersen of Olin, Mrs. Marie Schoon of Manchester, Mrs. Claire Hayes of Redding, Calif., Mrs. Helen Bender of Tustin, Calif., and Mrs. Joyce Herman of Anamosa.
Preceding him in death were his father and one son.
Pallbearers were Ronald Tallman, Todd Gerdes, James Herman, John Brodersen, Craig Schoon and Richard Stoppelmoor.
