Frances Elizabeth Gerdes was born June 12, 1915 at Langworthy, Cass Twp, Jones Co, IA. She was the daughter of Gerhard and Louise Andreesen Gerdes. Frances was the second child in her family of nine brothers and sisters. Frances received her early education in Freemont School in Cass Township through the fourth grade when she moved to the Anamosa Public School. She graduated in 1933 with a Normal Training Teachers Certificate. Frances worked at the Reliance Shirt Factory in Anamosa after graduation. Frances Elizabeth Gerdes and William Henry Brodersen were married April 17, 1940 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Anamosa, Iowa. Three children were born to this union. Frances and Bill farmed near Olin, IA until 1973 when they retired from farming and moved to Olin, IA. Frances belonged to the Wyoming Presbyterian Church and was an active member of the Gardner Chapter #374 Order of Eastern Star and the American Legion Auxiliary in Olin. She was involved with the 4-H clubs of Jones Co for years. She and Bill loved to fish and enjoyed many trips to Leach Lake in MN. Surviving are three children Sharon (David) Lindbloom, Ft Wayne, IN, Sarah (Duane) Carnes of Olin and John (Sandra) Brodersen, Olin. Nine Grandchildren, Kimberly Mattax and Bruce Lindbloom of Fort Wayne, IN; Keith (Debbie) Tallman of Anamosa, Jeanette (Troy) Espe of Cedar Rapids; Aaron (Terri) Tallman of Cascade; Stacy (Kevin) Osterkamp of Onslow, Nicki Brodersen and Andrea (Sheldon) Hunter of Wyoming; Robin (Brett) Morrow of Ottumwa. Nineteen Great grandchildren, Michael and Ryan Mattax; Christopher, Megan, Kegan, Ellie Tallman, Abbie and Jake Neff; Macy Espe; Kevan Schilling and Whitney Morrow; Ethan and Tyrus Tallman; Alden, Tyler, Trae and Ella Osterkamp; Landon and Carson Hunter. Three sisters, Marie School-Till, CT; Helen (Ralph) Bender, Tustin, CA and Joyce Joslyn, Coralville, one brother, Garrett (Janice) Gerdes, Morley. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband William in July 1996, two sisters, two brothers and two great grandchildren, Madison Tallman and Max Espe.
Frances Elizabeth Brodersen, age 91, of Olin, died peacefully in her sleep on Friday morning, February 23, 2007, at the Anamosa Care Center where she had been a resident since December 2004.
