GERDES
Velma E Gerdes, age 76, of Coralville, and formerly of Olin, died Friday, January 14 at Manor Care in Cedar Rapids after a long illness.
Funeral services were Monday, January 17 at the Hayden Funeral Home in Olin. Burial was in Forest Hill Cemetery near Anamosa. Casket bearers were Chris Sasina, Garrett Gerdes, Bill Halstead, Joseph Yopp, John Brodersen, and Duane Carnes.
She was born March 29, 1917 at Oelriches, South Dakota, the daughter of Charles & Lydia Wilcox Purdy. Her family moved to Maquoketa when she was young so Velma was educated in Maquoketa where she graduated in 1936.
On June 9, 1939 Velma married Alfred Gerdes at Anamosa. Except for 5 years at Olin in the late 1970's and early 1980's, the couple lived in Coralville. Alfred died in 1981. Velma has been at Manor Care for the past three years.
She worked many years at Hunter Manufacturing in Coralville.
Velma was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
She is survived by two sons: Van of Phoenix, Arizona, and Greg of Coralville; five grandchildren; and a twin sister Thelma (Mrs. Howard) Gisel of Maquoketa. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and infant son.
