REMEMBERING THE LIFE OF...

Frederick " Fred" J. Balken, 77, of 717 E. Gustavus, who died Monday, March 26, 1990 at Lake Region Hospital in Fergus Falls, Minnesota.

Fred was born on May 26, 1912 in Akron Township of Wilkin County, near Rothsay. He was the son of Julius and Emma (Fosse) Balken. He attended rural school district # 5 in Akron Township.

On September 4, 1936, he married Alvina Hazel Kastet in Rothsay. He was employed by Lindberg Motors in Rothsay for six years. He then began working as a parts man for the Rothsay John Deere Implement Company. In 1965, they moved to Fergus Falls where he continued working for the Ebersvillers, retiring after 35 years.

Wherever you found crowds of people gathered together, you usually found Fred. Fred was always willing to share information about his family or give you an opinion on almost any topic.

He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, The Eagles Club, and was an avid bowler.

Preceding him in death were his parents, one sister Evelyn Bilden, two brothers, Lester Balken and an infant brother, and one grandson, Steve Balken.

Survivors include his wife, Hazel, two daughters, Janice Lewis and her husband Robert of Baker, Karen Kimberling and her husband Kirk of Fort Collins, Colorado, and two sons, Harlan and his wife Lois of White Bear Lake, and DuWayne and his wife Phyllis, of Rothsay; 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Eunice Bergerud of Fergus Falls, Clarice Barrett and her husband, Don, of Portland, Oregon, Jane Griffin and her husband, Bob, of Seattle, Washington; seven brothers, William of Pelican Rapids, Roy and his wife, Ione, from Rothsay, Leonard and his wife, Chris, from Fergus Falls, Vernon and his wife, Darlene, of Brooklyn Center, Earnest and his wife, Elaine, of Rothsay, Jerome and his wife, Sherril, of Renton, Washington, and Loren and his wife, Lois, of Fairbault.
