Mrs. Julius Balken of Rothsay Dies at Age 80
Fergus Falls Daily Journal Saturday, December 22, 1967

Mrs. Julius Balken, 80, died this morning at Lake Region Hospital in Fergus Falls.

The former Emma Fosse, she was born on a farm near Rothsay on December 3, 1887, and spent her entire life in the area. She married Julius Balken on August 8, 1907 and they farmed near Rothsay for 51 years. The past nine years they were residents of Rothsay. August 8, 1967 they celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary.

Surviving are her husband, 13 children: William Balken, Roy (Ione), Balken, Earnest Balken, and Mrs Melvin (Evelyn) Bilden, all of Rothsay; Mrs. Morris (Eunice) Bergerud, Lester ((Marj) Balken, Fred (Hazel) Balken, Leonard (Chris) Balken, all of Fergus Falls; Vernon (Darlene) Balken, Minneapolis, Loren (Marlene) Balken, Fairbault; Mrs. Don Barrett (Clarice)), Portland Oregon; Mrs Robert (Jane) Griffin, Seattle WA; and Jerome (Sherrill) Balken, Renton WA; 39 grandchildren, 19 great-grand children and a sister, Mrs. Theodore (Christine) Hilde of Barnesville.

An infant son, one sister and four brothers preceded her death.

Funeral services will be held at Hamar Lutheran Church in Rothsay at 2 PM Wednesday, December 27. Burial will be at the church cemetery.
