Korean Royalty. Known posthumously as Emperor Gwangmu, he was the 26th and last King of Joseon (1863 to 1897) and First Emperor of the Korean Empire (1897 to 1907) he proclaimed in 1897. After the establishment of the Korean Empire he started the Gwangmu Reform in an attempt to modernize and industrialize Korea. In 1907 he was forced to abdicate and was confined to Deoksu Palace and his son, Sunjong, Became Emperor. He died suddenly on 21 January 1919, and it is speculated that he was poisoned by Japanese officials. He was buried at the Imperial tomb of Hongneung along with Empress Myeongseong.
