Korean Royalty. Yi Kang, Prince Imperial Ui (Prince Uihwa) was the 5th son of Emperor Gojong. His mother was Lady Jang, a court lady in waiting. He married Princess Kim Sudeok in 1892. He was appointed to the Special Ambassador to Empire of Japan 1895, and then a year later he became an Ambassador extraordinary and traveled to the United Kingdom, the German Empire, France, the Russian Empire, the Kingdom of Italy, and Austria-Hungary. Yi went to study at the Keio University in Toyko, Japan for a year in 1899. Then in 1901 he went to the Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia, United States where he majored in mathematics. he then went to various places in the United States until 1906 when he returned to Korea. In 1919, Yi tried to escape to Shanghai from Korea but was caught in Manchuria and sent back to Korea. Yi tried to escape Korea again during the same year but captured in Manchuria again and was forced to live in Seoul. In 1955 Yi and his wife were baptized as Roman Catholics to apologize for the religious intolerance that his grandfather, the Heungseon Daewongun, had caused during the Joseon Dynasty. Yi Kang died some time later on August 15, 1955 and was buried at the Imperial tombs of Hongyureung near his father and brothers.
