Korean Royalty. Born into the Korean Yeoheung Min clan as Lady Min Ja-yeong, Empress Myeongseong was the Queen consort of Joseon (1866-1873), and then Queen Regent of Joseon (1873-1894). She was the mother of Sunjong, Last Korean Emperor. She married Then King Gojong on the 20 of March 1866. It was at this time she was considered to be assertive and ambitious, unlike the Queens before her. She also did things that were usually reserved for men, like reading government books and teaching herself on history, science, politics, philosophy, and religion. She helped establish The Ewha Academy, The first all-girls' educational institution along with Mary F. Scranton (Known today as the Ewha Woman's University). She also made advancements in the press, medicine, religion, music, the military, and the economy which helped modernize and strengthen Korea. She was assassination in 1895 by the Japanese which was known as the Eulmi Incident. She was buried with Emperor Gojong in the Imperial tombs of hongneung.
