Holmes was born in Rayne Twp., Indiana Co., PA, the son of Irvin Kinter Mears and "Ellen" Mary Ellen Manner. He married Huldah Borland Helman on May 22, 1901 in Tanoma (Rayne Twp.), Indiana Co., PA. They divorced in 1923. He remarried (see Note 1) Rebecca Lytton Glenn.

There was no return, so either they did not get married at that time, or they did and the marriage was not recorded as having taken place. Holmes stated that he was a widower on the license, Rebecca was single.
Note 2: Holmes and his first wife, Huldah, were third cousins: their grandparents, Margaret (Kinter) Mears and Isabella (Borland) McQuown respectively, were first cousins.
