Holmes and Huldah Mears were the parents of six children:
1. Calvin Roosevelt Mears
2. Naomi Elizabeth (Mears) Crim Dennis
3. Dwight Mears
4. Thelma Irene (Mears) Shaffer Parran Swope
5. Dorothy Ellen (Mears) Biro
6. Raymond Gaar Mears
Holmes and Rebecca were the parents of five children:
1. Virginia Glenn (Mears) Perry
2. "Holmes" Jos. [initial only] Holmes Mears, Jr.
3. John Curry Mears
4. Rife Chester Mears
5. Bess Inga (Mears) Pretty
Note 1: At the time of the 1920 census enumeration, Holmes had already deserted Huldah and the children: she was living alone with her children in Hagerstown, MD, the youngest (Raymond), less than a year old. Holmes was enumerated in Norwood, Hamilton Co., OH with his new "wife," Rebecca. Holmes' and Huldah's marriage was divorced in 1923 (she filed in Indiana Co., PA and Holmes' whereabouts were unknown at the time). Holmes and Rebecca applied for a marriage license on November 26, 1919 in Augusta Co., VA, where she was living at the time. There was no return, so either they did not get married at that time, or they did and the marriage was not recorded as having taken place. Holmes stated that he was a widower on the license, Rebecca was single.
Note 2: Holmes and his first wife, Huldah, were third cousins: their grandparents, Margaret (Kinter) Mears and Isabella (Borland) McQuown respectively, were first cousins.
