The Wellington Leader
December 20, 1979

Robert Newton (Bob) Templeton, 70, had lived at Memphis for about 15 years, died Sunday, December 16, 1979 in a Childress hospital.

He was a member of a family prominent in the development of Collingsworth County, and the grandson of the founder of the Farmers Union. Born in Wellington, he was the son of the late Judge and Mrs. R.H. Templeton. His grandfather was Newton Gresham. He attended Wellington Schools and San Marcos Military Academy. He pursued three separate careers during his life. A graduate of Cumberland University Law School in Lebanon, Tenn., and Draughon's Business College, Wichita Falls, he practiced law for a time with his father.

While living here, he became interested in theatre management, and engaged in this work for many years, managing the Ritz and Texan theatres here, and theatres in Dalhart, Shamrock and Tulia. He was also a civilian employee at Dalhart Air Force Base. Still later, he entered the electrical and TV repair business. Bob Templeton, along with two friends operated Wellington's first radio broadcasting station, in the late 1920's. It was effective to the point that an Amarillo station complained that it interfered with the larger station's business.

Mr. Templeton was a Methodist. Survivors are a daughter, Mrs. John C. (Bobbie)Rhodes of Childress; one brother, Judge R.L. Templeton of Wellington; and two sisters, Mrs. Idabel Minter of Mesquite and Mrs. Lyle D. (Lois) Scott of Sulphur Springs. Grandchildren are Lester Bollinger of Dumas, Mrs. Gay Ames of Dalhart, Mrs. Carrie McClain of Kirkland, Mrs. Rhonda Trent of Hot Springs, Ark., Johnny Rhodes of Lubbock. James Rhodes and Lori Rhodes of Childress. There are 5 great grandchildren.
