Wade's parents moved to Pawnee County, Kansas about 1925 and farmed near Garfield. After graduating from high school in 1938, Wade worked at the drug store in Larned as a sales clerk and "soda jerk". It was there that he met his bride-to-be, Mabel Voran. It all started over a banana split.
