Mrs. John (Mathea) Balken died Saturday afternoon at her home in this city (Fergus Falls) at 217 W. Junius Avenue. Mrs. Balken was born April 27, 1855 in Gramercy, Hadeland, Norway and was 85 years old. She came to this country with her husband (and three children) in 1882, settling on a farm in the community of Rothsay, where they resided until 1908. When they retired and they moved to this city (Fergus Falls). Mr. And Mrs. Balken were married over 64 years. Mrs. Balken was a Christian woman, a devoted wife and mother. She was the mother of 13 children, eight of whom survive her: Mrs. C. (Caroline) Amundson oGrand Forks ND; Julius (Emma) of Rothsay; Mrs P.T. (Inga) Hegseth, Seattle WA; Mrs. O.C. (Helga) Stras of this city (Fergus Falls); Oscar (Mary) Breckenridge MN; Mrs A.M. (Alice) Erickson, Jordon; Mrs. Carl (Clara) Barks, Hollywood CA; Theovald (Betty) of Spokane, WA. She is also survived by 39 grandchildren and 23 great grand children. Five children preceeded her in death: Halvor, Iver, Edwin, Albert who served in WWI, and Mrs. Dave ( Martha) Zimmerman. Mrs. Balken's health has failed gradually and for the past year and a half she has been lovingly cared for by her daughter, Helga. Funeral services will be Thursday at 12:30 from the home and at 2:00 from Hamar Lutheran Church in Rothsay. Burial will be in the family plot at the Hamar Cemetery.
