Gene (really Imogene) was born April 11, 1913, in San Angelo, Texas, to Jessie Lafayette and Ida Mae Rainey Joiner. She resided in San Angelo her entire life, until recent years, when she moved to the Houston area to be near her sons. She was married for 67 years to Roland Roy McCullough until his death in 2000. She is survived by her son, Duane and wife Linda of Sugar Land, and Rodney and wife Lee Ann of Houston. Her grandchildren are Steve McCullough and wife Grace of Grand Junction, Colo., Laura McCullough Downman and husband Burch of Katy, Lane McCullough and wife Karin of Austin, and Robin McCullough Smith and husband Doug of Austin. Gene leaves five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one brother, Wilson R. Joiner of San Angelo, Texas. Gene, known as Gigi or Grandmother, to her grandchildren was a fun-loving person who truly enjoyed her family and many close friends. She was a longtime employee of General Telephone Company and started to work for the company when it was the San Angelo Telephone Company. Her position as chief operator made her the supervisor of many employees, many of whom remained her friends for years. She loved to play bridge and to cook, especially when the family gathered for the holidays. One of her favorite things was when she and Roland would take off on one of their famous drives to see the sights. No place was too remote for them to travel to by car. Even in her last days, one of her favorite things was to go for a ride in the country. There will be a viewing for those wishing to visit with the family from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, at Johnson's Funeral Home. A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, at the First Baptist Church in San Angelo. The family requests that those wishing to make a donation in her memory do so to their favorite charity.
