Roland was a true pioneer telephone man in West Texas, starting to work with the old San Angelo Telephone Company in the early 1930s. He worked through many different positions in the company and participated in the installation of the dial telephone system which replaced the central operators. The company became GTE in 1953, and some time later he became district manager and then central division manager for the company. He retired at age 65 but was retained as a consultant for awhile and finally retired again while holding the position of retiree liaison.
He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed golf, fishing, hunting and traveling, especially with his sons and many close friends. In recent years he has enjoyed the company of long-time friends over the domino table.
Roland is survived by his wife of 67 years, Gene Joiner McCullough, and two sons, Duane of Sugar Land, and Rodney and wife, Lee Ann of Houston. Grandchildren are Steve McCullough and wife, Grace, and son, Walker, of Aberdeen, Scotland; Laura Downman and husband, Burch, of Katy, and children, Rawleigh and Reagan; Lane McCullough and wife,
Karen, of Austin, and son, Mason; Robin Smith and husband, Doug, of Austin, and son, Carson. He is also survived by a sister, Alva Wheeler of Poteet, and many nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Joe Collyns, Bob Levo, Vernon Morris, Rex Bailey, Gene Vickers, Al Holcomb, Jack Gregg and Don Mortimer. Honorary pallbearers will be Whitney Whitehead, John Shepperson, Abe Walker and Ellis Porter.
Service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2, at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Jerold McBride officiating. Burial will follow in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are by Johnsons Funeral Home.
The family requests donations be made to a favorite charity.
