Though born in adjacent Voorhies, Etta was raised with her siblings and some of her half siblings on the family farm in Moreauville, LA. Her godparents were Rene Brou and Claire Coco, and she was baptized by Rev. Constantine Brachi on 13 Oct. 1900 at Sacred Heart Church in Moreauville. At age 20 in 1920, she was living at home with her twice-widowed mother Caroline Tassin Mayeux Segrue and her brother Thomas Segrue. The family would remain on their farm until the historic Mississippi River flood of 1927 took it away.

Etta married twice, first to Jacob Benjamin Harrison Gray (1894-1965) from Missouri, and second to George W. Lee (1903-1969) from Louisiana. She was George Lee's second wife. Etta's two children were Mary Mercedes Gray Webb (1921-1987) and Virgie Mae Gray Van Mattison (1926-1982). In 1930, Etta and her two young daughters were living in New Orleans with her brother Thomas Segrue and his family at 939 Poland Street. She moved to Kentwood by 1935. On 18 July 1937, she married George Lee; they lived with Virgie and Mercedes on Avenue D in Kentwood. Etta and her siblings Thomas and Edna remained close all their lives, as did their children with each other. When raising their families, Edna lived in McComb MS and Thomas in New Orleans and the families often visited one another.
