Mildred was born in Denver, CO on July 24, 1924, the second of four children born to Harold and Mary Goldsmith. She was preceded in death by her parents, her younger brother Arlen, and her older sister, Mavis. Her youngest brother, Owen, survived her in Mountain Ranch, CA.
Mildred spent much of her first 10 years in Borger, TX until her family relocated to Longview, WA in the mid-1930's. At Longview High Schoo, Mildred sand in their award-winning coir, an experience that helped engender her life-long love of classical music and later, opera.
Mildred met her husband-to-be, Oscar T. Woods, Jr in Longview; they were married in San Francisco on June 17, 1945 soon after Oscar's return from WWII as a U.S. Navy veteran. Their three children survive them. Oscar was employed by the CA Division of Highwauys as a civil engineer in Stockton and Bishop, CA. In Bishop Oscar and Mildred discovered the joy of raising horses, soon to become a major focus of teir lives. Following their return to the Stockton area in 1964 they purchased property near Acampo and began raising and showing quarter horses. Oscar's untimely death at age 53 on June 27, 1975 was devastating to Mildred and her children. After realizing she could not keep up the horse ranch she embarked on a new phase of her life.
Mldred traveled to numerous foreign countries including Ireland, Spain, Australia, Italy, Russia, France, Eastern Europe, Portugal and the British Isles. She also traveled to many states in the USA, including Hawaii and Alaska.
Several of her trips were opera-oriented; Mildred attended performances by Jose Carreras, her favorite tenor.
In the midst of her travels, Mildred relocated from Stockton to Maine to live with her daughter and her family for 10 years. She then returned to Stockton and resumed her frequent attendance at the San Francisco Opera House where she often met her close friends Michael and Mario. Mildred in well-remembered at Village Oaks Elementary where she shared her love and knowledge of operat with her daughter's sixth-grade students.
Mildred, or Millie, to family and friends is survived by her younger brother Owen.her children and granddaughters and 2 great grandchildren.
No funeral is planned. Mildred's children will conduct services at Mt. St. Helens, where Oscar and Mildred honeymooned in 1945, and at San Francisco's Opera in the Park.
