Music Producer. He was a significant figure behind the scenes of the 1960s rock music landscape. Born Barry Friedman in Los Angeles, he always was fascinated by circuses. His godmother (a publicist with the Ringling Brothers Circus) was able to assist him in landing a position as assistant producer for the ABC program "Chucko the Clown" (1956) and this led to a job on the show "Stars of Jazz" which ignited his love for music. During the early 1960s, he lived in France where he worked as a photographer and in 1962, he returned to Los Angeles where he found work as a publicist for disc jockey Bob Eubanks (later host of "The Newlywed Game"). Among one of his assignments was to promote The Beatles' appearance at The Hollywood Bowl in 1964. He became close friends with Stephen Stills and was a major factor in the formation of the group Buffalo Springfield, whom he served as their manager. Mohawk went into producing for Paul Butterfield and the psychedelic ensembles Kaleidoscope and the Holy Modal Rounders. While with Elektra Records, he produced the album "The Marble Index" (1968), a project with Nico and John Cale of the Velvet Underground. After marrying former Frank Zappa ensemble member Essra Mohawk, he produced her records. He left the music industry during the mid 1970s and moved to the Toronto-area where he pursued his dream of establishing a traveling circus, in addition to finding Puck's Farm family attraction.
