Singer and songwriter. She recorded under the names Sandy Hurvitz, Jamie Carter, and most notably Essra Mohawk. She was a graduate of Northeast High in Philadelphia and then attended The Philadelphia College of Art. In the 1970s, she co-wrote the cartoon "Schoolhouse Rock!" songs "Interjections!" and "Sufferin' Til Suffrage" as well as sang parts of them and "Mother Necessity." She then worked as a background singer for Carole King, Frank Zappa, John Mellencamp, the Jerry Garcia Band. She also recorded and arranged for Kool & the Gang. In the 1980s she sang the theme song for the "Teeny Little Super Guy" segment on on "Sesame Street." She also wrote the songs "Change of Heart" that was recorded by Cyndi Lauper and "Stronger Than the Wind" that was recorded by Tina Turner. She recorded on 14 albums from 1969-2019. In 1977, Rolling Stone Magazine listed her 1970 album "Primordial Lovers" as "One of the best 25 albums ever made." She served on the board of Musicians and Artists for Peace and was a long time activist for peace and an advocate for environmental protection.
