Robert Evans Instantly Killed in Accident

Robert Evans, thirty-six, 43 Summer Street, Bradford, was instantly killed when the truck in which he was driving was side swiped by a sedan during the heavy fog early Sunday morning, one mile west of Allegany.

Evans was on his way to see his parents in Olean in a Ford truck, the property of the Ellison and Ellison Furniture Company where he was employed, when the truck collided with a sedan alleged to have been driven by Edward Arrowsmith of Salamanca, in which Dan Evans, Frank Willis and Ray Halfinger, all of Salamanca, were riding, police say.

In reporting to Olean police, Arrowsmith declared that he was driving through at the time and did not see the approaching truck until it was too late to turn and avoid the crash.

A sharp swerve to the left, however, prevented a head on collision and the cars sideswiped. The truck, being the lighter of the two, yielded to the force of the impact and turned completely over.

Evans body was found jammed between the seat and the steering wheel. He was badly injured. Beyond minor cuts and bruises, none of the Salamanca party suffered injuries. They immediately called Olean for a physician, but Evans was dead before a doctor could arrive.

Sheriff E.W. Miller, Deputy Paul M. Gaylor and Under Sheriff Dick Bragg investigated the accident. Sheriff Miller stated that none of the Salamanca party is being held although it is possible that District Attorney Edward A. Krieger of Salamanca will conduct a grand jury probe into the accident.

Evans was the son of Mr. and Mrs. E.E. Evans, South Tenth Street, Olean. He had been in the employ of Ellison and Ellison, Bradford, for more than two years.

Mr. Evans is survived by his wife, Mrs. Florence Smith Evans; seven children, Damaris, Margaret, Robert, Caroline, Betty, Jack and Donald, all at home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E.E. Evans; four brothers, Wilfred Evans, Zelinople, Pa., Raymond, Howard and Roy Evans, at home.

Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery.
