Second child of 12, oldest son, of William Green Lockett and Sarah Jane Elizabeth Lockett, whose family had a habit of giving their children three given names.

Four of his uncles served in the Civil War, one of which, Augustus S. Lockett 1831-1862, died for the confederacy. His grandfather was Pvt. Thomas Lockett, Sr. 1762-1844 from Buckingham County, Virginia, who served in the American Revolutionary War. Thomas' father was Lt. David Lockett 1735-1795, from Buckingham County, Virginia, also a veteran of the American Revolutionary War.

Lt. David Lockett was given a bounty grant in Wilkes County, Georgia, later becoming Warren County, for his service in the war and the family moved from Virginia to Georgia in 1785.

Named for his father's older brother Pvt. Augustus S. Lockett 1831-1862, who died in the Civil War, and his mother's older brother John Alonzo Phillips 1840-1862.

Married Pearl A. "Neta" Phillips in about 1901 and they had three children:
