Eighth of nine children, sixth of seven sons, of Green Hill Lockett 1801-1870 and Mary "Polly" Ennis 1808-1877. Both parents were born in Warren County, Georgia and died in Randolph County, Georgia.

Four of his older brothers served in the Civil War, one of which, Augustus S. Lockett 1831-1862, died for the confederacy.

His grandfather was Pvt. Thomas Lockett, Sr. 1762-1844 from Buckingham County, Virginia, who served in the American Revolutionary War. Thomas' father was Lt. David Lockett 1735-1795, from Buckingham County, Virginia, also a veteran of the American Revolutionary War.

Lt. David Lockett was given a bounty grant in Wilkes County, Georgia, later becoming Warren County, for his service in the war and the family moved from Virginia to Georgia in 1785.

William Green Lockett married Sarah Jane Elizabeth Jordan 1850-1942. They had at least 12 children:
