He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on March 12, 1942 in Syracuse, New York. He was noted as being employed as an Office Clerk and also as Single, without dependents.
He died as a result of a crash landing of AT-6B #41-17422 near Napier Field, Alabama during the war.

Injured in a plane crash at the Advanced Flying School, Napier Field, Ala, Tuesday morning, Lt. Donald A. Gattner died late yesterday afternoon at Finney Hospital, Thomasvile, Ga.
Mr. and Mrs. Herman L. Gantter, operators of a bakery at 1849 Grant Boulevard and Lt. Gantter's fiancee, Miss Helen Boyd, of Edgehill Road, who left for Napier Field when they received word of the accident were stopped by the Red Cross at Montgomery, Ala., early today and informed of his death.
After resting for a while at Montgomery they will return to Syracuse. It is expected the Army will send the body to Syracuse for services and burial.
Members of the family were high in their praise of the Red Cross which they say did a good job in keeping them informed of the situation at all times.
Lt. Gantter, who attended Webster School and was graduated from North High School, was a crack pilot. He flew for two years at Syracuse Municipal Airport before enlisting in the Army Air Corps in March of 1942.
He won his wings and commission as a second lieutenant at Napier Field in March of this year and was immediately assigned to the advanced training field as an instructor.
Two weeks ago he came home to Syracuse on a leave.
Surviving in addition to his parents are two brothers, a sister, and several aunts and uncles, all of Syracuse.
