James L. Parks was born in 1819 in PA. His father was born in Ireland and his mother was born in PA in 1787. He had at least three siblings all born in PA: John 1816 Selins Grove, PA; Robert 1821 of Elkhard, IND; and Levi 1823 of Rome City IND. According to the 1850 census, James and his wife, Elizabeth (Long) were living in Concord Township, Elkhart, IND. They had three children: Benjamin Theodore 1842 Civil War hero, later of Neb, Martin Luther 1844 PA and Margaret Savallia. 1844. All the children were born in PA. The 1860 census shows James and his new wife, Mary, living in Selinsgrove, PA with a daughter Anna born in 1851 in IND (her mother was Elizabeth) and Catherine 1858 PA and Jerome 1860 PA. According to the Selinsgrove Times, Sept. 10, 1876, "When James Parks came to the polls, on Tuesday, Dr. Wagenseller stood at the place of voting. He demanded of Parks to know whether he had his (Walenseller's) ticket. Parks replied he had not, that he was going to vote for Dill. "Then," said Wagenseller, "I challenge your vote." Why! "Because you are a pauper." That is not true, Parks replied; I am not a borough charge and my taxes are paid. Parks however got his vote. We mention this is to show the meanness of the act; for if Parks had had a Wagenseller's ticket his vote would not have been challenged. This is Lumbard, Potter and Wagenseller's style and we mean that the public shall know it." He was a tailor by trade and for many years was the principal auctioneer in the county. He attended the Methodist Episcopal Church. By 1880 James was living in Selins Grove, PA with his second wife Mary (Gilbert). They had four children: (Rev.) Jerome L. 1860 pastor of United Brethren Church at Elkhart, Neb. then to Los Angeles, CA; (Prof) James Asher of York, Neb. 1864; Jessie E. (Parks) Krah and Robert. James is working as a laborer. He resided on the Isle of Que, PA in 1895. He may have been in Elkhart IN in Nov 1895 according to the Elkhart Review Newspaper the Rev J. L. Parks married George Timmus and Grace Williams. His mother and his brothers, Robert and Levi, were living there at the time.
Excerpt from the "Snyder County Times" Aug 17,1900. "On Saturday afternoon, death like a ministering angel, brought sweet relief to one who had become a burden to himself and to others, and who after raising a large family of boys and girls, was taken to the Penn township poorhouse, where death found him." "He was a tailor by trade and for many years an active and prominent auctioneer in this section of the country. He was twice married, his first wife was a Miss Long, who died about fifteen years ago, two sons and two daughters..."
