W. E. Metzger Services Monday

Death Follows Five-Month Illness

Services for William E. Metzger, 68, retired Lima coal and supply dealer and father of Lima's only Congressional Medal of Honor winner, the later Lt. W. E. Metzger, will be at 2 p.m. Monday.

The Rev. Arthur M. Romig will officiate at services in Sowards funeral home. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery. Mr. Metzger died in St. Rita's hospital at 10:05 a.m. Friday after a five-month illness.

Mr. Metzger and his wife accepted the medal posthumously awarded to their son. He was killed in an air crash in World War II. Lt. Metzger, for whom Metzger reservoir was named, was co-pilot of a bomber hit in a raid over a rail yard at Saarbruecken, Germany. He gave his parachute to a wounded bombardier, whose own had been riddled by enemy fire. The plane exploded a few feet from the ground while Metzger and the pilot were trying to land.

A native of Darke-co, Mr. Metzger had lived in Lima and Allen-co 65 years. He retired from the coal and building supply business about four years ago. He was a member of Market Street Presbyterian church.

Surviving are his widow, Ethel Badeau Metzger; two daughters, Mrs. George W. Scholfield, Route 4, and Mrs. C. C. Frederick, Jr., 1132 Richie-av; three sisters, Mrs. Martha Nitrauer, Columbus; Miss Bertha Metzger and Mrs. Cora Miller, 2355 Elida-rd; and four grandchildren.

The body will remain in the funeral home until after services.
