Dr Earl Berkey
Died in China

Monday the 26th, Mr and Mrs J M Berkey of this place were shocked by receiving a message telling their son, Dr Earl Berkey, a missionary in China was dead. The message had been cabled to the Methodist Board of Missions in New York and forwarded by them to the relatives in Nebraska. The message as received, stated that Dr Berkey died the 26th, but as it was received here on that date, and one day is lost in transmitting, owing to the change of time in mid-Pacific, it is believed that Dr Berkey died on Sunday the 25th.

Dr Berkey, with his wife, went to China as a missionary in August 1922, and has been teaching dentistry in the Methodist Mission College in Peking. A short time before sailing Dr Berkey was married to Miss Margerite Lough of Norfolk, who with a six months old baby survive him. Recent letter received by the parents from their son brought the word that he had been having some stomach trouble and was on a diet. He had been in the hospital but expected to be able to resume the work of teaching again in a short time. It was not known that his condition was critical and cause of his death was stated to the news of his death came as a great shock to his relatives, and also to his many friends here. Until a letter, or other communication, is received, giving details, it will not be known what are the plans for brining the body of Dr Berkey back to America. Mrs M. E, Crosby of North Platte, a daughter of Mr and Mrs J M Berkey, and a sister of the late Dr Berkey arrived Tuesday morning to be with her parents for a while.
