James Monroe Berkey was born in Medina County, Ohio
on March 14, 1848. He came to Nebraska and homesteaded
near the present village of Davenport in the early
spring of 1876, immediately improving his homestead
with a neat dugout house in preparation for his intended
bride.

Mr. Berkey was united in marriage on December 27, 1876,
with Anna Olsen, at Hebron, Nebraska, and this young
couple immediately established their home on the homestead, where they continued to reside until 1912, when they
retired from active farming operations, and moved to Davenport, where Mr. Berkey maintained his home until 1936.

Mrs. Berkey preceded him in death, she having departed this life on March 21,1935 and the following year Mr. Berkey closed his home and moved to Spokane, Washington, where he had continued to reside with his daughter, Myrtle Meyer until his death.

Mr. Berkey departed this life at his home at Spokane,
Washington on July 15, 1942 at the age of 94 years, four
months and 1 day.

He is survived by the following sons and daughters:
Clarence J. Berkey, Spokane, Washington; Myrtle M.
Meyer, Spokane, Washington; Cora M. Crosby, North
Platte, Nebraska; Charles C. Berkey, Spokane, Washington, Harrison M. Berkey, Spokane, Washington.

One son Dr. Earl R. Berkey, having died at Union
Medical College, Pekin, China, on May 26, 1924.

There are surviving 12 grandchildren and 3
great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Charles Berkham of Los Angeles, California
and Mrs. Jewett of Houston, Texas, survive the deceased.

Mr. Berkey was truly a member of that early pioneer
stock of Thayer County and Nebraska, and acquainted
with the early hardships and privations that confronted
that was so much a part of the development of this
great state. But through a long and active life, he has
at all times maintained that beautiful and simple Christian faith that had it's foundation in and could be sustained only by his firm and steadfast reliance upon the
guiding hand of an assuring and protecting providence.

He has lived a long, useful, and busy life, was a devoted and loving husband and a loyal, helpful and faith-inspiring father and grandfather. He always seemed a very part of the joys and sorrows of his children and close friends, and
was ever eager to obtain his own joy and satisfaction in
life by performing a service for others.

It is this example of sacrificial service and loyalty
to family and friends that will ever remain a joyful
memory to all who knew him.

Another upright, exemplary and long life has come
to a close, but the memory of this life will remain as a
living reality to the sorrowing loved ones and a host of
friends and neighbors.
