Character Actress. Born in Iowa, she graduated from West High School in Des Moines in 1916. She left the city and worked in nightclubs and on stage. In 1930, New York Theatrical Producer Norman Bel Geddes contracted her for the role of the amazonian Lampito in "Lysistrata" and was a hit. She is best remembered for her performance as a tyrannical prison matron in "Caged" (1950), this portrayal earned her an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actress. Other films: "House of Strangers" (1949), "Adam's Rib" (1949) (remembered in a wonderful scene raising in the air to Spencer Tracy), and "Westward the Women" (1951).
