Brookfield-Death of an Old Citizen

September 18, 1873, Mr. Humphrey VanOrnam, a citizen of this place departed this life on Thursday evening of the above date after an illness of only twenty-four hours. He was in the 70th year of his age-was living with his son, Roger, and died at his house-being in the same town in which he was born. He was truly respected, has been a member of the First Baptist Church of Essex for the last forty years and died in the firm hope of a happy future. He lived in this place for the most part of his life and brought up a large family. After some of his children with their families moved west, he was induced to go and try a new home, but not being contented, he returned, and spent the last few years of his life with his son, who as well as his wife and family, has the self-satisfaction and respect of his acquaintances, of treating him with true filial care and affection, both while in health and in his last illness.

Mr. VanOrnam's father, Hendrick VanOrnam was one of the pioneer settlers of this place. He moved into the wilderness when a young man having emigrated from an Eastern State. He was born in times when the wild Indians prowled around the settlers' homes-when the gun in the field of labor was considered as necessary as the axe, hoe or any farm implement. It is said that he, when a small boy, with an older brother, was captured by the red men and witnessed as well as passed through many thrilling scenes of savage cruelty, which might be of much interest to many if properly related.

Although Mr. Van Ornam lived to the ripe age of man, his loss will be severely felt by his many relatives and friends.
