Cleophus was the eldest of six children of Valerie Dufour III (1831-1870) and Clara Mayeux (1835-1920). He was baptized at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Mansura in 1853 (St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church record book #10 page 60). The 1860 census shows 6 year old Cleophus with his parents and four younger sisters in Marksville, where the family are farming. One other sister, born in 1857, had died before 1860. Their widowed mother is there with her children in 1870.

On 23 December 1875, 23 year old Cleophus married 17 year old Caroline Tassin (1858-1934) at St. Hyacinthe Church in Moreauville (later called Sacred Heart). The ceremony was performed by Th. Aug. Rebours before witnesses W. L. Voorhies, Zenon Guillory, and Alcide Mayeux (courthouse record # C-617 ). The couple had fivrchildren between 1876 and 1889): Jules, Maria Alida, Annie Lou, Marie Aline, and Jean Baptiste Wilmore.

Cleophus died about 1890 (perhaps as late as 1893). His widow, with a large young family, remarried on Oct. 31, 1894. She had four more children with her second husband, Stephen Segrue (1858-1901): Thomas, Edna Florence, Marie Anne, and Lescietta Mary (Etta).
