Martha Dean Mabry Scruggs, 78, died Saturday, May 15, 2010, in Northfield, MN. Born March 13, 1932, in Spartanburg, SC, she was the daughter of the late George Dean and Martha Kate Johnson Mabry and the wife of the late James Hodges Scruggs. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Spartanburg where she was a longtime Adult Sunday School teacher and choir member. She had also served as Sunday School Director for Cudd Memorial and West Main Baptist Churches and was President of the SC Southern Baptist Women's Missionary Union in 1966.

Survivors include a daughter, Deana Vander Aarde of Northfield, MN; two sons, Rev. James Hodges "Chip" Scruggs II and his wife Karen of Marion, SC, and John Mark Scruggs and his partner Edward Hawkins of Northfield, MN; grandchildren, James Hodges Scruggs III, Matthew Dean Scruggs, Anna Katherine Scruggs, James Evans Meredith, John Alan Dean Meredith, Mark Thomas Dean Vander Aarde, and Robert Dean Vander Aarde; one great-grandchild, Brooklynn Ann Scruggs; and a brother, George Robert Mabry and his wife Elsie of Charleston, SC. She was predeceased by a brother, John Wallace Mabry; and a sister, Mary Jo Mabry.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, May 22, 2010, in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. James Hodges "Chip" Scruggs II. The family will receive friends following the service at the graveside.
