Clara M. Shaffer, 97, died January 18, 2010, at Rest Haven in York. She was the wife of the late Melvin G. Shaffer, Sr.

She was born April 13, 1912, in Black Horse, Md.

A daughter of the late William M. and Edith (Jones) Kelbaugh.

Mrs. Shaffer was employed by the former Zupnik Sewing Factory, New Freedom. She was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, since 1941, where she taught Sunday School and sang in the choir. Clara served the Shrewsbury borough for 48 years on the Election Board. A member of the former New Freedom Chapter of Daughters of America, she achieved the office of Pennsylvania State Counselor. She was also a member of the Chapter 22 New Freedom Farm Women, AARP, and former President of the Shrewsbury Fire Company Ladies Auxillary. Clara was an avid reader, card player and enjoyed traveling.

She is survived by a daughter, Loretta J. Daniels of York; a son, Melvin G. Shaffer, Jr., of South Mountain; a sister, Marie Walker of Jacobus; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Clara is predeceased by two brothers and two sisters. I

Interment will be in Joseph Giesey Memorial Cemetery, Shrewsbury.
