Councilman Jack Mitchell
Dies After Long Illness

Jack Mitchell, 51, 813 N. 18th, died in Methodist Hospital in Lubbock at 2 p.m. Thursday following a lengthy illness.

The owner of Mitchell Van & Storage Co. here, Mr. Mitchell was also a member of the city council. He was serving his second term on the municipal panel.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday from the First Methodist church here with Dr. E. D. Landreth, pastor, and Rev. J. Lloyd Mayhew, Brownfield, officiating. Interment will be in Lamesa Memorial Park under the direction of Higginbotham Funeral Home.

Mr. Mitchell was born in Sulphur Springs and had resided in Lamesa since 1941. He was a member of the First Methodist Church, Knights of Pythias and Evening Lions Club. An active civic worker, he served as past president of the Evening Lions, past chancellor of the Knights of Pythias, and area counselor of Boy Scouts.

Survivors include the wife; two daughters, Mrs. Charles Jenkins of Topeka, Kan., and Lanelle Gay Mitchell of Lamesa; one son, Mac Ray Mitchell of Lamesa; his mother, Mrs. Myrtle Mitchell of Big Spring; a sister, Mrs. Ann Weaver of Ojai, Calif.; and five brothers, Arthur and Clarence Mitchell of Sulphur Springs, Charles Mitchell of Big Spring, Homer Mitchell of Oxnard, Calif., and Bobby Mitchell of Bethany, Okla.; and four grandchildren.
