William's mother died when he was 3, his father died when he was 10. It appears William and his brothers Cinncinatus and Thomas were raised by Joel Duvall and his wife Mildred.

He worked as an undertaker at the Brownington and Maplewood Cemeteries from abt 1910 to abt 1919. His son-in-law says William raised chickens for awhile in Texas. William then moved to Indianapolis to live with his daughter Marjorie and her husband Paul Lorenz. He worked for a short while as a gravestone salesman for Washington Park East Cemetery.
