At the age of 16, she married William Collins who was 14 years her senior, and who had children that needed to be raised. She bore him two sons, John and Josiah.
Collins moved the family to Marion County Ohio, and within months abandoned his wife and their two sons leaving them destitute; he later died - to our knowledge, she never knew when or where he is buried. Marion County Courts declared the marriage void.
In 1867 Rebecca married George W. Foos, with whom she had nine additional children. It was not a happy home life, and he was unkind to her and abused John and Josiah, both of whom ran away before the age of 14.
Following the death of her husband, she lived the rest of her life in Marion County and the city of Marion.
Though she was buried beside her husband in Likens Cemetery, her name was never etched on George Foos' marker until 2001 when the oversight was corrected by her descendants after verifying the correct location. This would not have been possible without the help of Marion County Prosecutor Jim Slagle and his legal advice, or the Township Trustees for Marion Township who allowed us to update the marker, legally.
