Daughter of Henry William Wade and Doris Edna Lawler Wade. She was the oldest of four children. The family moved to California in 1941. She graduated from Modesto High School is June 1951.
On December 27, 1951 she married her sweetheart and soul mate, Rex A. Petty. The following November they had a daughter, Marilyn Patricia.
While in college to become a teacher she realized her true calling was in nursing.
On April 19, 1961, Rex was killed in an automobile accident. Her soul mate was gone and she was left to raise a daughter that needed her.
In 1962 she married Cody Von Bowman. Her ''Sonshine'' Craig Steven was born in June of 1964.
In 1965, she learned of the new nursing program offered at Modesto Junior College. She graduated from MJC's nursing program in June of 1967.
Her Registered Nurse results came back from the State Board in November of 1967, while she was in labor with her third child, Carolyn Ann.
Her life had new meaning, she had found happiness again.
On March 10, 1968 she began working at Modesto State Hospital until its closure, when she moved to Stockton State Hospital. She found her calling in psychiatric nursing.

She became GRR-mama when her Grandson, Justin Wharton was learning how to say Grandma, and called her GRR-mama.
Her heart was broken when she lost her son Craig Steven Bowman on August 11, 2002.
She was diagnosed with breast cancer in June 1998. It was a long and difficult battle. She is buried between Rex and her son Craig Bowman.
