Singer. A husky-voiced contralto, she was one of France's leading cabaret entertainers for a generation. Originally intending to be a pharmacist, she moved to Paris after dropping her studies and began singing in venues small and large, including the Vieu-Colombier Theatre. She started her own establishment, the Red Rose Tavern, in 1949, where she continued attracting audiences and expanding her following. Morelli cut the first of her roughly 20 albums in 1957; she recorded on a frequent basis until 1978, winning a number of awards. In 1962 she opened La Pere Ubu Cafe where she played hostess many of the headliners of the day; seen several times on the stage, her credits include "Valmy" (1967) and Jean-Pierre Bisson's 1975 "Bluebeard Beardless and Son". Morelli was to make a few television and movie appearances from the early 1970s until 1992, probably gaining the most notice with the role of La Carline in the 1972 miniseries "Mandrin". She was designated Officer of Arts and Letters; much of her large recorded legacy remains in print.
