OBITUARY - No publication or date known. Obituary taken from family records.

"FARMER DIES IN THE FIELD. Heart Failure Takes Henry Kossow, Prominent Agriculturist. There was consternation and dismay in the village last Saturday evening when word was brought in to the effect that Henry Kossow was found dead in a field on his farm two and a half miles north of town. Mr. Kossow had been working in the field all the afternoon; it was quite warm and it was discovered he had went to the spring and gotten a jugful of water which tests one degree above ice cold, and drinking of this while his body was heated is supposed to have caused his death. Mr. Kossow not appearing at the usual time for supper, one of his sons went out to the field to ascertain the reason and there found the dead body of his father.

"Mr. Kossow as 57 years of age and of very fat build; for the past year or more he was not doing the harder labors about the farm and it is the opinion that the sudden exertion and high temperature affected his heart and the drink of cold water acted fatally.

"The funeral was held from the family residence Tuesday afternoon and interment was made in Pine Ridge cemetery. Rev. C. W. Emery pronounced the sad rites. Nearly every farmer family in the township was represented in respects paid to the memory of the deceased and many sorrowing friends in town attended the obsequies.

"Henry F. J. Kossow was 57 years of age on the 18th day of July; born in Mecklenborg, Germany; came to the county of Buffalo in Wisconsin at the age of eighteen and there took to wife Katherine Sutter. He remained a resident of Wisconsin until nine years ago when he came to Deer River. In starting settlement here Mr. Kossow had -- as he often said himself -- barely enough money to live upon, but by the hard work of himself and his family and careful dealing they have one of the best farms in the county, containing 280 acres, with about eighty in cultivation, excellent buildings and well stocked.

"Besides his life partner, deceased leaves to mourn, eight sons, all living at or near home, and two daughters, Mrs. Henry Truempler and Mrs. H. J. Breuer, both residing in the township. Beside these, the couple had two sons who died in Wisconsin.

"In the death of Henry Kossow this section loses one of its most progressive, upright and sturdy citizens, and at a time when the curtain opened a condition of comfort and contentment in life for his declining years. The blow is indeed sad for his living wife and faithful children, who have the brotherly sympathy of the entire community.

"Andrew Sutter of Fountain City, a brother of Mrs. Kossow, is here visiting the bereaved relatives."

Henry was survived by his wife Katherine; sons Peter,Edwin,William,Henry,Ernest,Carl,Herman & Arthur and daughters Elizabeth & Otilda.
