Sandy retired from teaching June 1, 2006, and a thought lingered in the back of her mind for several months about getting another dog one day so that Rocky would have a companion. While at her lakehouse in Milledgeville, Sandy and husband's 7 yr old granddaughter, Kaitlyn, decided to go into Petland to see the animals. Sandy immediately spotted cute little Rosie in a glassed-in cage playing with her pink blanket and being very playful all by herself. I asked one of the workers at Petland to let me see Rosie and he put us in a little room with two chairs. Rosie ran around the room trying to bite our feet. Kaitlyn and Sandy had to hold their feet up to keep this wild Pomeranian dog from biting them. Not sure why, but Sandy forked out $799 and bought Rosie that day as her retirement gift to herself. Sandy named Rosie after her best childhood friend named Rosie Moon. Rosie lived across the street from Sandy in Norfolk, VA, where they both lived on Hackensack Rd. At times, Rosie was not an easy dog to have as a pet. She was very head-strong. She bit Sandy's hands all the time and Sandy had marks and blood all over her hands for several months. Also, Rosie's pink blanket has holes all over it from where she would chew on it. (She will be buried with this pink blanket.) Rosie was apparently traumatized as a puppy by a larger dog at Petland because she was scared for several years if another dog came around or if she hear one barking in the distance. Rosie never was a lap dog, does not liked to be picked up or a lovable dog. Anytime Rosie goes to the vet, the vet has to put a muzzle on her to keep her from biting all the employees there. Rosie preferred to be by herself most of the time and stayed on the couch in the living room or under the bed most of the time until she got older. Around 2018, Sandy started making her stay in the keeping room with Dinky and Rambo. Rosie liked to walk with Rocky and was very sad when Rocky died. Now she rides in a dog stroller instead of walking because she is too weak to walk a long distance like she did earlier in her life. Since about 2020 she likes to know that Sandy is nearby and will bark if Sandy leaves. Sandy tried to overlook the anxieties Rosie suffered all her life and loves her and treats her the best way possible. Rosie knows Sandy is there to help her, not to ever hurt her. Sandy has always had lots of patience for Rosie and her strange ways.
At the age of 17 on May 21, 2023, Rosie had a skin condition called seborrhea which causes flaky skin and hair loss & is incurable. I am treating it with a medication that has helped it tremendously. She also has a big swelling in the right side of her body about the size of a grapefruit. She has difficulty walking but still insists on walking by herself instead of me picking her up. She still has a great appetite and drinks water and does not appear to be in any pain at this time. Rosie sleeps alot these days. I hope she dies in her sleep.
