Diamond was a beautiful quarter horse owned by a sailor that worked with Sandy's father. The sailor did not have time for Diamond so he just sat in his stall day after day without any human interaction. Sandy's father worked out a deal where we would pay for his stall rental and feed so that Sandy could ride the horse.
Sandy rode her bike every day after school and on weekends for several miles to the horse stable on the naval base called Rota. Sandy was with Diamond every day until dark. She loved Diamond and Diamond loved her. He couldn't wait to get his carrots, apples and sugar when Sandy arrived each day.
When Sandy's family moved back to the states her father checked into shipping Diamond back to the U.S. but it was very complicated beginning with him having to stay in quarantine once in the USA so Diamond had to stay in Spain.
It was a very sad time for Sandy when she rode Diamond for the last time in June 1964.
