Harry Frost, 93, died May 17, 2010, after a brief illness. He is survived by his five children: Charles Frost (Beth), Albuquerque, NM, John Frost (Linda), Huntsville, AL, David Frost (Anne) and Mary Frost Watson, Trussville, AL, and Mark Frost (Laurie), Huntsville, AL; and seven grandchildren: Erin Watson Overstreet (Hunter) and Meghan Frost, Birmingham, AL, Christopher Frost, Los Angeles, CA, Hampton Frost, Dallas, TX, Marian Frost, Chicago, IL, and Maxwell Frost and Iris Frost, Huntsville, AL. He lost his beloved wife, Gloria Cunningham Frost of Millport, AL, September 1982.
Harry was born October 12, 1916 in Hackleburg, AL, the son of William Albert Frost and Nancy Cromean Frost. He grew up in Red Bay before attending Jacksonville State College and moving to Birmingham as a young man. In 1941 he enlisted in the Army, and continued to serve his country for the next 28 years. While serving as an Artillary spotter in Italy, Harry was captured in combat German forces and spent the next eight months as a prisoner of war in Stuben, Poland, Oflay Number 64.
After the war, Harry returned to Birmingham, married, and raised his family in Southside, where he lived for 58 years. He rose to the rank of Major in the Army Reserve while employed for 34 years at the US Post Office, retiring as Postal Supervisor in 1975, at which time he operated his own business.
The greatest source of pride and pleasure for Harry was the success of his five children and their own families. He lived simply, enjoying walking the hills of Southside, weekly visits to the library, playing bridge, watching television with friends, and, as a widower, sharing his life with several cats. Behaving responsibly, being truthful, keeping calm: these choices are what Harry Frost will be remembered for.
Visitation will be Thursday, May 20, at 10:00 am with services to follow at 11:00 at Johns Ridout's Elmwood Chapel at 800 Dennison Ave., Birmingham Alabama.
