Law enforcement pioneer. Sheriff of Beaufort County, South Carolina, from 1977 to 1990. After serving in Korea and Viet Nam and retiring from the Marine Corps as a First Sergeant, Morgan McCutcheon settled in Beaufort. After becoming Sheriff he took steps to modernize his department and made it a model for Sheriff's departments around the country. His reforms, including the training and equipping of SWAT teams, the hiring of female deputies, and modernizing equippment so that different law enforcement agencies could communicate with each other rapidly, are now taken as a matter of course. In 1990 Sheriff McCutcheon was awarded The Order of the Palmetto, the highest honor given by the state of South Carolina. The Sheriff was a member of the Baptist Church of Beaufort, and a Mason.
