JOHN CANNON
He was born on a farm near Mt. Calvary Church. He was married June 19, 1852 (?). He was married to Elizabeth Crane, a daughter of the late Richard Crane of Martin County.

Mr. Cannon was well known in this city where he made his home with his daughter - Celia Montgomery. Because of his jovial disposition and ever ready, hearty laugh, Mr. Cannon came to be known among his friends and acquaintances as "Laughing John" Cannon. Though past 88 years of age, Uncle John enjoyed exceptional health and vitality until the present summer. His wife died a number of years ago and since then he had made his home with one and another of his children. Being one of the oldest residents of this county at the time of his death, Mr. Cannon leaves probably a larger number of living descendents than any other man who has lived in this country.

John Cannon Obituary

Martin County Tribune, August 18, 1921

Uncle John Cannon, one of the most widely known residents of the county died Saturday at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Jane Montgomery, after a long illness of a complication of diseases. He had never been in good health since a severe attack of the influenza two years ago and his last illness was so intense that his family had given up hopes of his recovery, and his death was not unexpected.

One of the remarkable things was his being able to live for nearly one month without food of any kind a practically without milk or water. Mr. Cannon was in his eighty-ninth year and was born and reared on a farm near the Crane school house in north Perry township.

He was a son of Joseph and Mary Cannon and was one of a family of nineteen children. The date of his birth was February 16, 1833.

He was married to Miss Elizabeth Crane and to them were born eleven children, ten girls and one boy. Those living are: Julia Fields, Jane Montgomery, Celia Montgomery, Hester Howard, Malinda French and James. All of them are residents of Martin county except Mrs. French, who lives in Paxton, IN.

He leaves 42 grand children, 81 great grand children and 3 great great grandchildren.

Two brothers, Joseph of Loogootee and Isaac of Shoals, and one sister, Mrs. Nancy Tinker of Indianapolis survive.

He was buried in Mt. Calvary Cemetery on Sunday
