A member of one of the oldest and most highly respected families of the community was called in death when Mrs. Hester Howard passed away on last Friday morning in her home in the south part of this city. She had been seriously ill for a year, suffering from carcinoma of the liver. (*NOTE: Death record stated cause of death was secondary anemic cholcystitis [sic], which is not carcinoma but a serious infection.)
Mrs. Howard died at the age of 67 years. She was born in the Mt. Calvary neighborhood north-east of this city, on June 6, 1864. She was a daughter of John and Elizabeth (Crane) Cannon. Of the family, a brother James Cannon and a sister Mrs. Jane Montgomery of Loogootee and a sister Mrs. Cecilia Montgomery of Shoals survive.
Her husband was William Howard, who preceded her in death about forty years ago. Following the death of her husband her son Rudolphus [sic] now Rev. R. H. Howard of Burns City, and Earl Howard, now of Binghampton [sic] New York, continued to reside with her until recent years.
Mrs. Howard joined the Methodist church in early girlhood, and was a consistent adherent in the faith, attending church as long as her health would permit. Funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon in the Mt. Calvary church northeast of this city, and the remains were laid to rest in the nearby cemetery. The services were in charge of the local pastor, Rev. G. E. Killion.
