Services for Wylie A. McKnight, 78, of Burneyville, were held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 2, at First Baptist Church in Marietta, with the Rev. Tommy Higle officiating.
Mr. McKnight was born October 31, 1922, at Bangs, Texas, the son of Wylie A. and Ruth Anne Fields McKnight. He died Thursday, March 29, 2001, in the Ardmore Veterans Center.
A resident of Burneyville for the past 17 years, Mr. McKnight previously lived in the Fort Worth, Texas, area. He and Dorothy Vivian McCalip were married March 13, 1944, in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and they recently celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary.
Mr. McKnight served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II and also served in the 15th Air Force, stationed in Foggia, Italy. Decorations and citations he was awarded included the European-African-Middle Eastern with five Bronze Battle Stars, Distinguished Unit Badge, the Good Conduct Medal, Purple Heart, Air Medal with three Bronze Clusters and one Overseas Bar. Mr. McKnight was wounded in action on a mission over Toulon, France, on July 11, 1944.
In 1983 he retired from Bell Helicopter in Fort Worth. Mr. McKnight was a member of the First Baptist Church in Marietta. His hobbies included woodworking, camping and traveling.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy McKnight of the home; three daughters and sons-in-law, Sue and Bobby Watson of Oceanside, California, Mary and Douglas Pearson of Draper, Utah, and Betty McKnight and Randy Crist of Austin, Texas; three sisters, Audrie Lee Coffman of Early, Texas, Bernice Stapleton of Burleson, Texas, and Lillian Dwiggins of Asheboro, North Carolina; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Mr. McKnight was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Jack Norman McKnight; and a sister, Geneva McCormick.
Pallbearers were family members and honorary pallbearers were the members of the Men's II Sunday School Class at First Baptist Church, Marietta.
Interment was in Terral Cemetery, Terral, under the direction of Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home.
