Helen is the youngest daughter of Pearley and Gertrude (Potter) Thomas. She is a graduate of Pittsburgh Teachers College. She married first in 1943, Lawrence Reinecke who was killed in action over France in World War II. She married a second time, to George Niemeir on March 30, 1947, they have three sons: Raymond, Thomas and Frank.
