Matilda Mullen was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1854. Her parents were James Mullen Sr. and Ann Pagnan Mullen. James immigrated from Ireland to New York in 1849 during the Irish potato famine to avoid starvation. He made his way to Michigan where he met his wife, Ann Pagnan. Ann was of Indian origin, born in Canada. Little else is known about her.

After Matilda was born the family moved to Portage, Columbia County, Wisconsin where they lived on a farm. In 1866, the family moved again to a farm in Watopa, Wabasha County, Minnesota.

When Matilda was a teenager she changed her first name to Fanney. In 1870, she was living in Plainview, Minnesota where she was employed by Edward and Mary Halleck as a domestic servant. Then, in 1874, the family moved to Wabasha City, Wabasha, Minnesota which is a small community located on the Mississippi River. Here Fanney lived with her family for more than ten years. Around 1888, the family moved to Saint Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota.

Little else is known about Fanny, apparently she never married. She was killed at Saint Luke's Catholic Church on May 9, 1900 in Saint Paul, Minnesota when the chimney of the church collapsed during a storm . Fanny is interred at the Calvary Cemetery there, Section 39, Block 9, Site 37.

Miss Mullen, who was killed by a falling chimney while in the act of prayer and adoration in St. Luke's Catholic church last Sunday evening during the storm, was a native of Dubuque, Iowa, and a most exemplary and devout young lady. The remains were buried from the residence of her sister, Mrs. Fosdick, on Laurel avenue, last Wednesday morning, and the burial was in Calvary cemetery.
