Johanna "Josie" Cullinane Mullen was born in Corwin Township, Logan County, Illinois on December 4, 1872. Her parents were Patrick J and Annie Conaghan Cullinane. Patrick was a coal miner. They had a total of six children, all girls, viz.: Johanna, Mary, Julia, Catherine, Nellie, and Elizabeth.

On July 26, 1896 Josie married Lieutenant Edward Henry Mullen, of the 5th Illinois Infantry, Company G, a veteran of the Spanish-American War. For many years they resided in Middleton, Logan County, Illinois where they owned several businesses including the Mullen's Cash Economy Store. Three children were born to Edward and Josie, viz.: Edward Richard, Theodore Normand, and Vincent James Mullen.

To all who knew Josie, especially her husband and children, she was remembered as a gentle, kind, loving mother who was a highly valued member of the Mullen family. Josie died in Chicago, Illinois on January 3,1929. She is interred with her husband in the mausoleum at the Lakeside Cemetery in Pekin, Tazewell County, Illinois.
