Obit can be found in The Olean (NY) Times Herald, May 5, 2012. Ruth passed away at the Olean (NY) General Hospital after a short illness. She was the daughter of Howard DeLoss and Lena Johanna (Dutton) Smith. She married Capt. William Earnest Johnson on Feb. 10 1943 in Massachusetts. Capt. Johnson was a United States Army Fighter Pilot in World War II. He was killed in action on April 10, 1944, about three weeks after the birth of their son Roderick. On Oct. 29 1946 Ruth married her loving husband of 65 years, Glenn C. Lowe. Ruth was a graduate of Olean High School and continued her education at Jamestown Community Collage and earned her bachelor's degree from St. Bonaventure University. She was an avid reader, belonged to a writting group and had started to write a book when her illness struck. She was a former member of the Amaranth and a past president of the Zonta Club of Olean. She retired as an executive Secretary to the City of Olean Civil Service Commission in 1985. She had been a member of the First Baptist Church of Olean for 80 years, having served on the board of trustees, as deaconess and a Sunday school teacher. She was involved in genealogy research and was the Town of Olean Historian from 1992 to 1995. She was elected Concilwoman for the Town of Olean and served from 1998 to 2005. Of all the wonderful things she did throughout her life I will best remember her as my best friends very kind Mother and my Cub Scout Denmother. She taught me more than some of my teachers.
