He was born in Ripley County, Ind., and moved with his parents to Andrew County when seven years old. Twenty-four years later he was admitted to the bar and after practicing for a few years he retired to his home farm north of this city.
After the election of his brother, David Rea, to congress in 1874, he returned to Savannah and formed a partnership in law with Isaac R. Williams. Four years later he returned to the farm where he lived until elected probate judge in 1886. He served in that office twelve years. Since then he had been engaged in the real estate business here. He served in the Union Army during the Civil War and was always a staunch Democrat.
He is survived by a wife and eight children: James M. Rea, present probate judge; Gallatin H., Thomas B., Claude Rea, Mrs. H. S. Rector and Miss Ellen Rea, all of Savannah; Earl Rea of Platte City; and Frank H. Rea of Kansas City.
The funeral will be held this afternoon from the First Christian Church, of which Judge Rea had long been a member. The Rev. A. R. Hunt, pastor, officiating." St Joseph News-Press, March 2, 1914
