Gottfried was born in Kries Pyritz, Pommern, in 1814 and sailed for America in 1854 with his wife and their four children, William Frederich born 1835, Augusta Louise 1838, August "Gus" Friedrich in 1841, and Hannah Wilhelmine 1845.

Gottfried's wife was Hannah Charlotte "Lottie" Butt born in 1809 in Brallentin, Germany, the daughter of Christopher Butt and Anna Sophia Buchholz.

The emigrants made their way first to Watertown, Wisconsin, and in 1858 came to live in Green County near the City of Monroe where many of their descendants still call home.

Gravesite Details

The stone is broken off from its base and engraved GELMER died Aug 25, 1861. It is about 3 feet from his wife Charlotte's which is spelled Zillmer with two Ls.
